After the Earth was used up, we found a new solar system and hundreds of new Earths were terraformed and colonized. The central planets formed the Alliance and decided all the planets had to join under their rule. There was some disagreement on that point. After the War, many of the Independents who had fought and lost drifted to the edges of the system, far from Alliance control. Out here, people struggle to get by with the most basic technologies. A ship would bring you work, a gun would help you keep it. A captain’s goal was simple: find a crew, find a job, keep flying.

You could say, three years after the final battle of the Unification War, things are still pretty shook up. We’re all just folk now, as the saying goes, but on the whole, the conflict is still pretty fresh, especially to those with a knobby stick up their collective pi gu‘s. All things considered though, most folk just about went back to doing the things they were doing before the war, except now there was a bit more cleanup to be doin’.

This is the story of the crew of the Treefrog-class Light Freighter Vagabond, carving out an honest bit of work in the space lanes between systems. Of course, out in the Black, “honest” tends to carry a fairly broad interpretation…
